Captain Barton was in the War of 1812 _________________________________________________________
By Alfred Yost in 1934. ===Captain Joseph Barton got his rank for service in the war of 1812 out of Ross Co., Ohio. St.Lewis estate records says that Captain Joseph Barton died in the winter of 182? of a sickness and we the undersigned heard Captain Joseph Barton say on the day of his death that it was his will and desire that after all debts were paid his loving wife Elizabeth was to have the balance of his estate. Signed Enoch and Polly Steen and Margaret Bancroft ( Elias ) Thomas C.Rector swore on March 8, 1823 that Captain Joseph Barton died interstate and had not left a will. Mrs Elizabeth Barton made an affidavit 10 March 1823 that Captain Joseph Barton's true natural heirs were Eliza, Wharton R., Amanda, Kimber, Wm.,Elias, Thomas and Stephen Barton all living in St. Louis. In the estate sale totaling 672. The purchasers were Mrs Eliza Barton, Kimber Barton, Elias Bancroft, T.C. Rector, Thomas Wetherton, Albert LeFon, Michael Riley, Jack Fry, E. Barton, A.H.Evans, C. Lockhart, E. Steen. August H. Evans was the crier and sold on 3.28.1823. _________________________________________________________ Captain Joseph Barton was a renter farmer on the Thomas C. Rectors farm just north of the Village of Saint Louis ( the property ran from what is now Bibble and Ibast Streets 4 th to the river)- now the terminal railway freight depot.
________________________________________________________ The administration bond of a farm to Alex McNair, Governor of Missouri, was dated 5 Feb. 1823 and signed and witnessed by James S. Conway, Elias Rector, Stephen Barton, William Barton, Mrs Elizabeth Barton and Thomas C. Rector. ________________________________________________________ Captain Joseph Barton was in his forties when he died . He was buried in the old Franklin Cemetery. No Marker in this cemetery. Remains were reinterred in Bellefoutaine Cemetery in 1855 with one shaft stating that no markers were legible in 1855. ----------------------------------------------------------------
A HISTORY OF SOUTHERN OHIO COUNTIES by Rev. Gilruth shown Joseph Barton as a son of Kimber and Elizabeth Barton ( pg 20 and 21 ) THE FRENCH GRANTS OLD TIMES by James Gilruth, March 28, 1872. from The Lawrence Co Genealogy Soc. Newsletter Nov 1992 Pg 7 says that Joseph Barton was a son of Kimber and Elizabeth Barton ----------------------------------------------------------------- It seems that his sons Stephen and William were of age in 1822/23 as they signed a court paper which they couldn't have done as minors. It is hardly possible that they were Capt. Joseph Barton's son but probably were his brothers or cousins as Kimber, son of Joseph married first in 1840. ------------------------------------------------------------ From FREDERICK RECTOR'S SONS He had 9 sons and four daughter. One daughter, Elizabeth, married Joseph Barton.
