Missouri, just east of the Big Muddy, area called Fancy Bottom near present Weston,Mo. when they were on the way to Oregon. They went in a large wagon train led by Wm and Alex Vaughn, leaving from St. Joseph, Mo. They left St. Joseph, Mo. Thomas Cady had his land claim next to the one of Wm. Vaughn. The older Michaels were all Democrats and great admirers of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. None had owned slaves and opposed slavery. They opposed the Civil War and thought the war was caused by political jealosy. Not all the Michaels came west. Four of Jared's were mature adults and stayed in Indiana. THE ONES THAT CAME WERE ELI, ELIJA GRANT,ANNA, ELIZABETH, HANNAH, DAVID KELSO. Some were married and had children.Ana was the wife of Jason Clark and had two children and Hannah was the wife of William Forgey Cincinnati District Vol 1 Dearborn Co. Fruitt, Brownsville, Oregon says that he was born 9 Oct 17 Married to Mary Kelso 25 June 1815. The below are notes copied from material by Marjorie Nichols. "Five children of Mary and Jared Michael married in Indiana. Perhaps 3 daughters died in Indiana. At least 5 grandchildren died in Indiana ( 2 of Ann and Jason Clark, 3 of John B. Michael's children.) Jared and Mary Michael left Indiana with most of their children. Eli Michael with wife Nancy and 5 children,Ann Michael and husband Jason Clark and two living children, James T. Michael, single male age 21 who left the train to take Nancy Michael back when she left her husband Eli,, Elizabeth Michael Alvard WIDOWED WITH NO CHILDREN. ( she really had left her husband, Joseph Alvord and married Thomas Cady without benifit of Divorce ) Hannah Michael and husband William Forgey, no children but lost one on the trail.Elijah Grant Michael age 13 who drove one of the wagons and David Kelso Michael, age 10. The Michaels wintered 1846 in Platte Co, Missouri. Upon arriving in Missouri, they camped for a week while the men spent the week riding around the neighborhoods looking for a suitable place to spend the winter. They were looking for a place that had extra housing, food, feed for the stock and where they could work through the winter months. Four men would start out in as many directions, go as far as they could so as to make it back by night. Finially they found a man who had a large house and plenty of fodder, also 1200 bushels of corn in his crib. The man was anxiuos to sell his corn and fodder, so a bargon was made. This man furnished the men with work which consisted of clearing land, rail splitting and building fence. The first of May, the Michael party left Missouri with a wagon train, traveling the Oregon Trail route. They took the St.Joseph Mo. route. It took six months to reach Oregon. Indians contacted the wagon train several times, no damage, once the cattle were stampeded. Only the very old, the very young, or the sick were allowed to ride in the wagons, as they were loaded with supplies to last the trip plus a year. Most every male, female and child walked barefooted. Hannah and William had a baby along the trail, it died six weeks later, buried ahead of the wagons so wagons could roll over it and hiding its place to keep the Indians from digging it up"Other source- Mae Drew has birth of Jared as 9 Oct 1792 and death 1870.1850 Oregon census gives birth 1790. Marj. Nichols says he owned land in Dearborn Co., Indiana in 1818. Were in Clinton Co Indiana 1830 Census Both died on their donation Land Claim at Brownsville, Oregon. Nine of their 10 children were born in Indiana and 6 came to Oregon with them. Jared had a compass that was 35 degrees off and went out and surveyed his section of land This caused all roads around it to be off square. He refused to sell, barter or buy land to straighten it out and there were many quarrels and fist fights over this survey. His designated land claim was No.1753 7 March 1849. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From Everett E. Stannnard, Albony, Oregon 4 Nov 1923 They moved to White County, Indiana in 1820. It is told that he killed a large bear with a tommy hawk when it attacked one of his hounds. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Jared Michael of Linn Co, in the territory of Oregon, being first duly sworn, says that he is a white settler on the public lands of Oregon, and was a resident thereof on and before the first day of December 1850 that he was a native-born citizen of the United States and that he was born in Monomgalia County and cultivated that part of the public land in Oregon particularly described in the notification No. 2068 hereinto annexed continously from the 19 th day of October 1847 to the 25 th day of March 1883 and he further says that he is intermarried with Mary Michael his wife and that he legally married her on the 23 rd day of December 1815 in Pennsylvania.
Subscribed and sworn before me in Oregon City this 25 day of March 1853 (Signed) Jared Michael ----------------------------------------------------------------- the Michael cemetery is on the George Foust farm ----------------------------------------------------------------- Lore has it that Jared was a blacksmith and carried a large amount of change when he left Missouri so he could collect for his work. Also, that someone was stealing his feed while on the trail so he put some wooden pegs in the grain and then found them in the manure of the animals that were fed the grain. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From Bristow files - Jared and his wife, Mary, lived and owned property in Decatur Co, Indiana, then moved to White Co, where they lived for 26 years. Jared and his brothers were woodsmen and hunters, He moved his wife and six children by covered wagon in 1846-47. Five more children were born after their arrival.. Jared established a Donation Land Claim D.I.C. # 1753 about 3 1/2resent town of Brownsville. His sons and sons-in laws took claims adjacent to his. Jared is buried in the Michael Cemetery on his son,s D.L.C.. The graves are unmarked but in the left rear of the fenced area. The farm was later known as the Fruitt farm. The Fruitts are descendants of David Kelso Michael, the youngest son. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Source unknown - Jared Michael went to Portland to catch a boat to California to mine for gold. He came back with enough money to build the house. He went by boat because many outlaws waited on the border to rob men coming back from the gold fields. --------------------------------------------------------------- It seems that our Jared was still a resident in Decatur Co, Ind in 1835. Jared and Mary Kelso Michael were in Clinton Co, Ind 1840 census.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From notes of Averill Abbott - The Platte river was dry and they strained urine from live stock to drink. If they had dug a few feet in the sand they would have found water.
