Misc. Notes
from the research files of Edwin Witter Daniel MacCoon became a selectman of Stonington in 1747 and was on the town council of Westerly in 1767 and 1760. these two towns, one in Rhode Island and one in Connecticut are just a short distance apart. As we described in the border dispute there was considerable , even vehement, disagreement between the Connecticut and Rhode Island men, including vandalism of homes and imprisonment, on both sides. and the Coons were in it on both sides. Things calmed down in the early 18 th century. Daniel was a minister in the Sabbatarian Church, THE SEVENTH DAY BAPTISTS, which the Coons helped found. The center of the church community was the meeting house by the Powcatuck River, by Peter Crandall's bridge, now called Meeting House Bridge. If you go there today you will see the old cemetery and the minister’s circle. The stones read like the family album. Just near is the cove where the baptisms were done. The Sabbatarians intermarried a great deal, naturally. Daniel's wife was Elizabeth Hall, daughter of James Hall and Sarah Babcock, good Sabbatarians all. By her he had 9 children who all married Sabbatarians. Daniel was living as late as November 1768. As he grew older he deeded his land to his sons, which was a form of social security at that time. ----------------------------------------------------------------- He made a deed to his son, David, of Hopkinton 16 April 1754 and to his son Jonathan 1 April 1760 ----------------------------------------------------------------- References Headstone rubbings by L. The Macoone and Coon Families of Westerly and Hopkinton by Charles W. Farnham. He did not leave a will but in 1751 he deeded land to his son, Elisha with his wife Elizabeth yielded her dower rights.Daniel Maccoon was granted administration of the personal estate of his son, James, who died in the expedition against Crown Point. He also deeded land to his son, Daniel Jr, On March 30, 1747. The Westerly town council gave the select men at Stonington, Conn. information that Daniel MaKoon Jr. and his wife and child were inhabitants at Westerly. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Charles W. Farnham genealogist The below information was gathered from the Hartford Times . The information is not entirely in line to other sources. In fact there is a different name for his wife, Sarah instead of Elizabeth.. I will list what he found from the Hartford Times whose source is not named. 1. Jonathan ( M. Elizabeth Stewart 4 Dec. 1758 Hopkinton, R.I. 2 Jushua of Hopkinton ( M. Margaret Burdick of Stonington 7 April 1763 Hopkinton, R.I. ) 3. Rev. William B 1743 ( Married Freegift Stetson of Westerly 6 Jan 1763, William of Hopkinton - Hopkinton V.R. William died in Stephenville, N.Y. in 1801 ) 4. Elisha M Judith Nichols ( ( Judith was probably the daughter of David and Sarah Nichols of Westerly. David Nichols made a will in which he named a daughter, Hannah Coon. We know that in Elisha's will he called his wife Anne. It may be that his first wife and that Elisha married a sister of Judith, Hannah who was called Anne. Elisha's marriages not listed in Westerly or Hopkinton, V.R. ) 5. Hezekiah B. 1745 died 1806 M ( ! ) Sarah and ( 2 ) Elizabeth. ( my friend had a will of Hezekig will made in Petersborough, N.Y. which named sons Aaron, Wm.,George, Hezekiah and Daniel 6. David ( M. 26 Dec. 1761, Thankful Button - Hopkinton V.R. ) 7. Nathan ( M Anna Hall 23 Dec 1743 Westerly V.R. ) Anna Hall daughter of the James Hall Jr. and Rachel Meckome who was the daughter of John 2 John McCoone.Westerly vital records list Ann Hall's birth as 1 May 1725. This list of Daniel's children would make Nathan a brother of Elishabut it seems to me quite a space between Nathan who was married in 1743 and Hezekiah who was born the same year. Of course there may be a number of daughters of Daniel which were not listed. Nathan went to Belin, N.Y. 8. Thomas of Hopkinton T Thomas Coon of Hopkinton and Anne Crandall of Westerly m.June 16, 1763. 9. Matthew He deeded land to following sons Joshua 18 March 1762, David 16 March 1659, Jonathan 1 April 1760, Elisha 1751 and entered into indenture with son Hezekiah 1 Nov 1768. The confusion about the wife of Daniel. Many times it is written as Sarah, as Dr. Mires has it, After careful study, Mr. Farnham concluded that it was Elizabeth Hall.
