He probably studied medicine under his father-in-law in the Wyoming Valley, Penna.. His wife, Susannah, died just before the Wyoming Massacre. She having died June 12 th and the Massacre was the first of July. Col. John Butler (Called Indian Butler)was leading 1000 French and 600 Indians and attacked the white settlements who only had about 340 men because all the able bodied men were away fighting the British in the Revolutionary war..They were led by Col. Deniston and a Col. Zebulon Butler a cousin to Indian Butler. Indian Butler had captured two other settlements and wanted to talk to Zebulon. Zebulon marched out of the fort with his men to meet the Torries and Indians. It was a trap and a massacre. All was confusion most were killed while some escaped to the river or the fort. Dr Gustin was on a horse and got away although a bullet grazed his head and went through his hat. Then he ,probably with others, with a white flag went behind the enemy lines to negotiated a surrender. He was one of the six who signed the paper. Then the Indians came in and were looting and getting quite unruly. Indian Butler said that the remaining soldiers and family should go somewhere as he could not guarantee their safety. Dr Gustin and Dr. Hooker Smith saw that they had to do something to save their families and made a boat and 15 persons started down the river including Dr Lemuel Gustin, his two baby children, Sarah and Polly,( Polly died of exposure) his father and mother (this must have been his father- in law and Mother in law - the Hooker Smiths) and one of their grandchildren and William Gustin, his younger brother, and the housekeeper. Also James S. Bradford, Polly, Deborah and William Sutton. William Sutton was married to one of Hooker Smith's daughters. Also Louisa Burnham, a girl given to them. Another girl who they left at a settlement along the way. She had no family as all were killed. This would have been the complete family. The Indians were killing all the way and one of Gustin's daughters died of exposure. They landed at what is now Harrisburg and Dr Lemuel set up practice at Carlisle. Dr. Smith must have returned as he was credited for 50 years of public service in the Wyoming Valley. `Materials above basically came from the Gustin Compendium. Note- Asa Stevens from my Stevens line, a great grandfather of mine, was killed as a lieutenant in the Wyoming Massacre. His family escaped through the woods and walked back to Conneticut where they had come from. One boy died of exposure. It was called the march through the SHADES OF DEATH. Dr Lemuel Gustin later married a Mrs Mary Parker by whom he had several sons and daughters who mostly moved to Mississippi where they were successful planters but the family lost all in the Civil war confusion as they were considered Southern people by the Northern soldiers. The Union Soldiers came and took all their property. _______________________________________________________ The lineage book of the Daughters of the American Revolution it was stated on page 53 that he died in 1807 ----------------------------------------------------------------- From George W. Pg 182 Dr Lemuel Gustin was in the Wyoming Valley in 1769 It is possible that he studied medicine with Dr. Wm. Smith, a prominent citizen of Wyoming and a surgeon in the Continental Army. He married Dr. Smith’s daughter who died a few weeks before the Massacre leaving a four year old daughter with her father. 2 companies of Continental Soldiers were ordered to leave and join the Commander-in-Chief. the number of men and boys left were about 400. The enemy were 400 Bridish and Tories and 600 Seneca and Mohawk Indians. Dr Gustin was in the Massacre but manager to retreat to the fort. The enemy demanded a surrender and the capitulation was signed by Dr. Gustin and others. The enemy leader then said that they could not protect the survivors at the Fort. Dr Gustin and and his family obtained a boat and escaped during the night down the Susquehanna River. Landing for a short time at Fort Augusta and Ft. Hunter and reached John Harris’ ferry, now Harrisburg and from there proceeded to Carlisle. His daughter accompanied him and in 1792 married the Rev. Nathaniel Snowden.
