He was a soldier in the siege of Boston and the Battle of Long Island. He commanded Company in 1777 when appointed surgeon. He and his first wife had 10 children. He also had two other wives but no more children. He was a surgeon and physician at Rye, N.Y. and in 1772 he transferred his practice and business to the Wyoming Valley in Penn. He was an ardent patriot and on May 15, 1775 he enlisted in the third Company, First Regiment Conn. Troops. He served with his regiment inNorthern New York, Lake Chamlain and Canadian expeditionsHe re enlisted in 1775 in the TenthCoon. Regiment. He joined Washington in New York and fought at Long Island.He was commissioned a captain and commissioned a surgeon 27 May 1778 and at the time of the Wyoming Massacre in July 1778 was away with the Wyoming Batalion. He marched with General Sullivan in 1779 into Indian country and by his cheerfulness and example greatly encouraged on thet fatiguing and dangerous mission. After the war he was chosen the first judge of the fifth district luzerne Co Penn. court of common pleas taking office 11 may 1787. He erected the first iron works on the Susquehanna River having unbounded faith in the future of the mineral wealth of Penn. After his death his heirs received twenty-four hundred dollars for his serviceas surgeon during the Revolutionary War.
