John William “Bill” Michael was raised in Landax, Or., a villiage which was obliterated after the Lookout Point Dam was completed. He met Edna Stephens in Oakridge, Or. and they were married in Eugene on 17 June 1917. The Michaels lived in Oakridge, Eugene and Roseburg before purchasing a 200 acre farm at Thurston in 1939. they worked the property as a Herford farm untill Bill was killed in a tractor accident on the farm in 1952.
While Bill was a young he went into the livery business at Oakridge, Or. He was a guide for tourists, hunters and fishermen in the Cascade mountains. He also worked with the government in transporting supplies for fire fighters, tree planters and foresters. In 1919 he sold the stables and moved to Eugene where he became a hardware and farm inplement salesman. In 1921, he purchased the Tourist Garage on Pearl Street between 8 th and 9 th in Eugene. He then obtained the Plymouth and Chrystler agency in Roseburg, Oregon, selling those cars in 1923 and 1924 there and then in Eugene until about 1932. During the depression years he was manager of the Hest Haven Memorial Park.
