Love and Barton- Dry Goods, Clothing, Carpets, gents’ Furnishing, Boots and Shoes. This house occupied a pleasant store room 25 x 100 ft filled with elegant stock values at $10,000. The firm began business here in 1889, and its trade has grown to a most flattering extent. W,R. Barton is a native of Mo. has been in trade here for many years and was postmaster of Laclede. He is a member of the I.O.O.F.
---------------------------------------
MARCELINE newspaper mentioned that Wharton R Barton Jr. was Co. assessor in 1906 From Mary E Carothers- I remember Mr and Mrs W.R.Barton Jr. He was called Jack. He had a drugstore in Lacleded. I remember reading in THE BLADE ( a Laclede newspaper ) printed in the early 1900's that he had a son who was in business in Brookield and apparently worked for him in a store but returned to Lacleded after a few years. They also had a daughter who married a Hatcher who, I think , was a Baptist preacher
------------------------------------------------------------
I have a copy of his will in my Barton materials. He left all his worth to his wife and assumed that she would take care of their daughter, Lena Hatcher, if and when necessary.
