Roger Mowry first appears in Plymouth Mass. where he was made a freeman in 1631. Soon afterwards he removed to Salem where he was a member of the church in 1636 and the following year he and his family comprising of 5 person had 50 acres of land laid out for him. About 1643 he removed to Providence, R.I. and was made a freeman of the Providence plantation in 1655 and served as a commissioner in 1658. There was a tradition in the family that he was related to Roger Williams. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From GENEALOGIES OF RHODE ISLAND FAMILIES selected and introduced by Gary Boyd Roberts " Within the cemetery near Woonsocket, R.I.opposite the Friends Meeting House and near tECT OF STATEhe main entrance has lately been erected a unique monument to the Mowry family in America" It contained eight generations from Roger Mowry through his son, Nathaniel, over 100 names. There is a short history of Roger Mowry in my notes part of which follows.* Eighteen May 1631 names of such who desire to be a freemmen among them were Roger Mowry and Roger Williams. Neither of the two rogers stayed in Boston to accept the duties and privileges of freemen in the colony. But, soon after, we find them citizens in Plymouth, later became citizens of Salem and finially they lived side by side ar Providence, R.I ----------------------------------------------------------------- From RECORDSOF THE COLONY OF R.I.
