ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS Oct 12, 1884 When he ran for Representative on Democratic ticket. ( he did not win ) “ E.R. Barton running for Representative was brought up in the dry goods business, working as a clerk and salesman in his father’s store when not in school. graduated from Central College in Fayette, Mo. at 18 .... in 1863 went to Montana and engaged in mining and stock raising until 1870, returning to Mo. and reentered dry goods business with his father. June 1873 came to Colorado and mined for two years. Spring of 1875 he helped form the Continental Oil Co. at Greeley though principal office was in Denver. He is now Vice-President of the above Co. The business had spread from the Missouri River to the Pacific coast. He is essentially a representative of the business interests of the City and the State, a man of strong intelligence, cool, good judgment and, with the heart for the welfare of all his fellow citizens he will make a legislator who will be of value in the councils of the State”
