From a loose paper found in the library at Jonesville Michigan. Lived in Guildford, Conn. After his first wife died and he married Widow Carter he returned to England and died of smallpox in 1654. Thomas Jones " not far from 21 "arrived on a ship that sailed from England on May 20, 1639 and arrived in New Haven, Conn , July 10 or 15. He was the sixth of 25 signers of the covenant, an instrument amazingly similar to the Mayflower Compact, It was in about mid-atlantic _________________________________________________________ from HISTORY OF COLONY OF NEW HAVEN Thomas Jones possibly married his wife, Mary,.after coming to New Haven. They had three children before 1850 ( Savage says four : Sarah, Samuel,Nathaniel and Thomas. ) He soon after married widow Carter went to England and died there of small pox in 1654. A son, Nathaniel, and daughter ,Sarah ,who married June 8, 1665 John Pratt of Saybrook and remained in New England. Savage says that Thomas died one month after his mother and Nathaniel died in ∫Guilford early in 1668, probably in his minority _______________________________________________________ HISTORY OF GUILFORD AND MADISON CONN. A freeman, Thomas Jones had his home lot of two acres on the east side of the square . He was possibly the first marshall and continued in that post until June 9, 1635, ---------------------------------------------------------------- From Jones Genealogy - Thomas Jones came to America in 1635 with Mr. Whitfield, landed in New Haven, Conn. and later settled in Guilford. He came from some county north of London. In 1639 he was the 6 th signer of the Guilford Covenant and was not far from 21 at the time. His home lot in that settlement lay next to that of John Bishop on the east side of the public square and contained about 2 acres of land. He became the first marshall of Guilford plantation. When Mr. Whitfield tendered his reason to the church at Guilford in 1649 - 1650 for his removal, the enquiry was made of every man concerning his particular in paying the ministers, Thomas Jones " professed his willingness and hoped to be able to continues present payments " He had evidently come the America for a more free exercise of his religious and possible political opinions. and returned to England when his friends came into power. At any rate he left Guilford in 1651 and was back in England by 1654. There he contracted smallpox which caused his death. His second wife had at least one daughter by her first marriage. -----------------------------------------------------------------
