Bartlett Deacon John Cooke, son of Francis of the Mayflower company, who married one of Richard Warren's daughters, turned Baptist. This caused a stir ond a flurry of discussion. He moved to Dartmouth, where he was followed by some of the Howlands from Duxbury, and became a lay preacher. It was not long before the Baptists were accepted as freeman.
