He had lived in Winchester 8 years before his death. Cause of death on death certificate was General Paresis of 5 year duration, which undoubtedly was a stroke. He was listed as a retired farmer. He enlisted for the Civil War in Hillsboro, Ohio. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I have a copy of his application for a pension and it contains the following data-He was applying for a Civil War pension on 4 Nov.1904. He states that he was a resident of Winchester, Adams Co., Ohio., 1907. He enrolled in the service in Hillsboro, Ohio 25 April 1864 in Company G 128 Reg. Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private and was honorably discharger at Camp Chase, Ohio, on 13 July, 1865. He was 5 ft. 9 in tall, fair complexion. Brown eyes, brown hair was a farmer and born Mt. Vernon Furnace, Franklin Co., Ohio. He lived in Missouri 10 years, Kansas 16 years and the rest of the time since the was in Adams Co., Ohio.He applied for a pension at the Columbus Ohio , Certificate No. 743957 ---------------------------------------------------------------- -I have copy of an affidavit from T. Miller who says that he has known James Madison since 1869 and that he was disables severely by rheumatism from the war. There was a lot of confusion as to who was entitled to his compensation after he died as he had had four wives. I have a lot of these records in my files.
Rheumatism when he came home from the war and that he has kept him at his house for months because of the disability. Made in 1897 ----------------------------------------------------------------- The original legal papers were destroyed when the court house burned in Adams
Co.in 1910. I have an affidavit that says that James Madison Gustin was married to Mary Matilda Scott about 1892 and were divorced the 6 th day of October 1894. Statement made by O.C. Reynolds.In regards to widows pension for Sarah A. Gustin. made in Peeples, Adams Co. Ohio. I Affidavit made by Sarah J Shiver, in West Union, Adams Co, Ohio, in 1922 says that she was a witness in the divorce of James Madison Gustin and Mary Matilda Scott. Made in regars to widows pension for Sarah A. Gustin. ( I have a Copy) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding Widows claim by Sarah A. Gustin., I have a copy of an affidavit by Edgar F. Gustin giving the details of his mother's death as entered in the computer. This was made in Shawnee Co, Kansas in 1922. ( I have a copy ). _________________________________________________________ Regarding pension claim by Sarah A. Gustin, widow of James Madison Gustin, Julia Marsh states that her mother Amanda Gustin, first wife of James Madison Gustin was dead. Made in Dayton Co., Ky. in 1922. ( I have a copy ) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding pension claim by Sarah A. Gustin, widow of J.M.Gustin that his mother Mary Matilda Scott, second wife of James Madison Gustin had died in 1913. Affidavit made by W.F. Karskadonat Peeples, Adams Co. Ohio. in 1922.
