From DANIEL WINDSOR HOLT'S STORY=Written about 1935
In the spring of 1880 James Holt and 13 other families decided to sell their Missouri property and Immigrate to Oregon. A good part of the year was spent selling their farms, selling off stock except what they aimed to take with them which was only horses. On the 10th day of April the immigrants started, each family having two wagons and teams. Besides that there were some extra saddle horses. The trip was uneventful at first and going through Nebraska there was plenty of sage hens and fish to eat.Later, the only fuel that they had was bufallo chips and the water was real bad. Unless necessay they did not travel on Sunday. They laid over to rest the teams and to hold Churh services on the big prairie. At Pole Creek, Nebr. a 7 year old boy died and was buried on the trail. They arrived at the Weiser River valley in western Idaho and set up claims the 13 day of August, 1881. Two years later James Holt and his brother-in-law Daniel Evans moved to Coffeyville, Ks. They travelled back to Pocatello, Idaho, 240 miles to the railroad which took them to Kansas by the way of Kansas City,Mo. They looked around and Daniel Evans bought 320 acres of land but James Holt only rented land from him as he was not sure that he wanted to settle there. James Holt did not like Kansas and moved around in Missouri for a while before settling in Camden Co. Mo.
