FROM DANIEL WINDSOR HOLT'STORY Samuel's grandson
Grandfather Evans had come to Missouri as an early pioneer settler. He was of sturdy stock and very reliable. He carved a great farming empire out of the vast wilderness which confronted him. A weaker man might have given up and been content with a meager farming existance. Not Grandfather, he worked diligently plowing the ground, sowing his grain, and by his hard work and sacrifices he became the wealthies farmer and also the recognized leader in his community. Neighbors aacquainted with his determination and wisdom went to him with matters in which they were in doubt, and immediately when something new was talked about they went to Sam Evans to see what he thought.. With all his strength and ability, grandfather was liked and took personal interest in the poor and weaker settlers who for some reason or other could not seem to get along. If one was late in getting his plowing or planing done, grandfather sent one of his own sons to help or always saw to it that there was money for seed. His assistance , his chearfulness and faith gave others confidence and the will to do.
I was five years old when grandfather Evans was killed accidentally while harvesting corn. He stopped the wagon loaded with corn in front of the corn crib. Dinner was ready and the men decided to eat before they unloaded the corn. Just as he stepped on the hub of the front wheel the horses became startled and bolted. This threw him under the wagon which rolled over his head killing him instantly. For a long time I could not understand why the grown-ups did not eat that nice dinner. I was hungry.”
