He came from England in1651. He married Ruth Hubbard whose father, Samuel Hubbard, came from England in 1633. Robert Burdick, Tobias Saunders and Joseph Clarke, among others, settled in the Colony of Rhode Island. Mass. and declaired the small portion of Rhode Island where they lived as a part of Mass. and they were ordered to leave.They were ordered to leave and refused so were arrested and taken to Boston and refused to give bail and remained in prison for two years until there was an exchange of prisoners as there was kidnapping on both sides. The King of England decided in favor of Conn., a third party, who later settled with Rhode Island who gave the disputed part to Rhode Island and the dispute was ended. Among the settlers who took allegiance to the King in Westerly on May 17, 1671 were listed as John Crandall, Tobias Saunders, Joseph Clarke, Robert Burdick, John Maxon, John Mackoone, ect.At the outbreak of the King Phillip's Indian war, Westerly was on the exposed frontier and he moved his family to Newport till the danger was over and then moved his family back. In 1692 he made an agreement with his Son-in-Law, Rev Joseph Crandall, to take care of him in his old age. The division of property ect. is listed on page 4 of " The Descendants of Robert Burdick " Much of this is condensed from NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES BY W.R.cutter ----------------------------------------------------------------- One line, their son, Samuel, goes down to Heber J. Robert Burdick was made a freeman on 22 May, 1655, moved to Westerly before 1661 and Married Ruth Hubband, daghter of Samuel Hubbard The line of children is different from those shown on the compter in severay children. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Material from David Heiden says that he was released from prison in Boston after paying a fine of 50 pounds. ----------------------------------------------------------------- He was baptized by Joseph Lorry or Torrey according to the rcords of the ist Baptist Church or Newport, R.I. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From a hand written paper found by me in the Westerly R.I. Library ROBERT BURDICK OF NEWPORT AND WESTERLY. He was in Newort before nov. 19, 1652 on which date he was baptized by Joseph Torrey ( from 1 st Baptist Church of Newport Records ) In 1654 " It is ordered that all those inhabitants in the collonie that have been eceived freeman to act in any town or collonie since Mr. Coddingtons commission was exhibited shall be owned freeman of ye collonie and that ye names of those that are not recorded yet as yet recorded, shall be brought in the next court " In 1655 his name was spelled Burdict and was entered among the last nine on " the Roule of ye freeman of the Colony ( R.I. CR Vol 1, 299 ) Robert Burdick apparently had not been admitted Freeman when the roule was copiled or his name was verlooked for the printed roule in the R.I. CR 1:302 for Newport was added with eight others after the Newport roule had been completed. As of May 22 1655 at a meeting at Providence he is received as freeman of Newport and again at a meeting in Newport May 19, 1657. ---------------------------------------------------------------- In 1660 a company was formed in Newport to buy from the Indian Sosa a large parcel of land known as Misquamicut ( later Westerly ). The purchase was made in 1661. Robert Burdick, Tobias Saunders and Joseph Clarke were the first to come. Elder John Crandall an Elder in the Baptist Church in Newport came soon.
