He arrived in Salem, Mass. in 1635 and was among the 60 colonists who marched from Watertown, Mass. to found Conn. during a terrible winter.They left Mass because of persecution for expressing Baptist views.He along with his wife and one daughter and four others formed the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Newport, R.I. Tasu ( Cooper ) Hubbart, his wife,was the first convert to the SDB Church in Newport. The information here is gleaned from" The Descendants of Robert Burdick of Rhode Island" by Nellie Johnson. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FROM SEVENTH DAY BAPTISTS IN EUROPE AND AMERICA Mr Hubbard seems to have treasured the day they accepted the Sabbath truth the same as their birthdays. Although Samuel Hubbard had left the Baptist Church and joined the S.D.B. church in Newport they stll recognized him as a Baptist and one of the three sent by the church on April 1668 to Boston to defend th Baptists in the city who were being persecuted ----------------------------------------------------------------- From A Crandall Heritage and Legacy by A.L.Crandall He and his wife were both in the party that marched through the wilderness from Watertown, Mass. during the terrible winter in 1635 to become the founders of Conn. They were persucuted in Mass. for expressing their Baptist views. Samuel Hubbard finially in 1648 found refuge in R.I. where he was associated with Elder John Crandall and others in founding the colony of R.I. which stands above all others for its democratic principles. ----------------------------------------------------------------
