Genealogy of Thomas E Cady - Person Sheet
NameColonel Thomas Stevens
Birth1575, Dovenshire, England
Misc. Notes
The name STEVENS came from the Greek, signifying a cross. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From Genealogy and Personal History of Northern Pennsylvania by John Jordon LLD. Librarian of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. ----------------------------------------------------------------- History of Chelsea Vol. ! by Chamberlain He was an armorer in Buttolph'd Lane, London, England who contracted with the governor and Company in March 1629 to supply arms for the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was himself a member of the Company and gave fifty pounds to the common stock, and three of his sons and a daughter became settlers of the colony. He signed the instructions to Captain Endicott. Though the family was of Dovenshire in the early days, he removed to London where his children were probably born. Children: (1) Thomas emigrated to America in 1660.(2) Richard, Father of Samuel of Marlborough. (3) William (4) Cyprian (5) and Mary, married to Captain Whipple of London. There were two more girls but names were lost. They did not come to America. ----------------------------------------------------------------- There is a real problem here because GENEALOGICAL AND PERSONAL HISTORY OF NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA BY JOHN W. JORDON lists William as the father of the other children and the son of Col. Thomas Steevens ( original spelling). This imposes another generation as Thomas and Cyprian were then grandchildren of Col. Thomas Steevens. As there are few dates, I accept the materials in the STEVENS FAMILY- DESCENDANTS OF THE BROTHERS THOMAS AND CYPRIAN STEEVENS emigrated from London about 1660 and of Richard Steevens of Concord. by Edwin Henry Stevens (1861-1939) He had four sons and three daughters but only one came to America and the others identification not known. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Stevens family by E.H.Stevens says that our Col. Thomas Stevens was not the London Armorer ----------------------------------------------------------------- From HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF MARKBOROUGH by Charles Hudson This author says that there is a William generation between Col Thomas and Cyprian. Looking at the dates it seems reasonable since without the William generation Col. Thomas would have been almost eighty when Cyprian was born. -----------------------------------------------------------------
From THE HISTORY OF CHARLESTOWN, N.H. by Rev H.H.Saunderson. Pg 556 or during the Protectorate, removed to London. Very little is known of this ancestor but it may be inferred from his title that he was a man of some distinction as he lived in times when such offices were not easily attainable, except through personal merit, or the influence of considerable wealth. He had four sons, Cyprian the youngest.
