Misc. Notes
Lived at Chillicothe, Ohio for 16 years as he was orphaned at the age of 16 when his mother and father and 3 of their children died of Milk Fever. He worked in his uncle's drug store in Chillicothe, Ohio, for 13 years.,1823 to 1836. He moved to Michigan where he spent one year and then to Wisconsin in 1837. He was a pioneer in Rochester, Wisconsin, and was postmaster in Rochester, Wisc. one source says, for 22 years. He also ran a drug store and candy shop. He was on the town board, deputy sheriff and Justice of Peace for years. He was an Odd Fellow, staunch Republican and member of the Congregational Church. Source of a lot of information was Cady Saga Pg 154 ( my Copy ) and my pictures of the cemetery. Also page 165. Conflicting dates for his second marriage. The dates used were from History of Racine and Kenosha Co- Rochester twp. Pg 661. The Racine Advocate Directory page 262 lists Cady, Henry, Confectionery, Ect. NE corner of State and Main. Duplicate information was found in History of Rochester pg 6 in the Rochester library. He was postmaster at Rochester 1873 - 1881 and 1889-1890. In 1991, Grey and Marge Abendroth were living in1992 in his home built in 1839 at 102 N State Street, Rochester, Wisc. He was buried from the Congregational Church in Rochester where he had been a member for 40 years. His birth was not recorded till years later when he was in Wisconsin. He seems to be the family lodestone for the slow moving gathering of the Cady Clan in Wisconsin. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 census June 1860 Rochester, Wisc. Shows Henry and wife and 6 children at home and Thomas, his brother, and his wife and four children all living together. 1850 census shows him a widower since his first wife died in 1849 and he remarried in 1851 The census shows him and 6 children at home and a Emily Armstead with her 3 months old son, Nelson. Due to the circumstances I would believe that Emily Armstead was hired housekeeper. The census shows him as owning 2000 dollars in real estate ----------------------------------------------------------------- A man by the name of Jerome Case came to Rochester in 1842 with a threshing machine that did not separate the trash from the grain. He employed a Stephen Thresher and they improved the machine using Mr. Cady's barn where the first trials were made, The machine was a success and Mr. Case went to Racine and made a fortune manufacturing Case farm implements. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Henry Cady built a home on State Street and lived on the property known as " Cherry Hill " farm. When he returned to the village he took up his residence in a brick house next to his former home. This became the life-time family residence. He opened a drug store and was for many years postmaster. Mr. Cady was frequently called upon during his long life in Rochester, to serve in some position of public trust. ---------------------------------------------------------------- From History of Racine Co.
