In 1857 tithe tables he lists no Blacks, no horses and one cattle. In 1897 he bought 225 acres on south branch from John Gustin of Berkeley Co. WV. in 1800 Berkeley Co. Tax list includes Abortly, Robert and Alpheus Gustin , Brothers,of the Sleepy Creek community ( on Cherry Run ) of the Slaughter district. In 1802 Alpheus and Robert Gustin were granted a store license In 1803 Alpheus Gustin was appointed postmaster of Berkeley Springs He was postmaster until 4 Jan. 1815 at his death.

From MARTINSBURGH GAZETTE. Obituary in Jan 12, 1815 lssue.
Died on 10 December last at Berkley Springs, Alpheus Gustin Esq. postmaster of that place with a violent attack of croup { croup, diphtheria ) which terminated his existance in less than 24 hours.
