Gustin- The Orchard News, Orchard, Antelope Co. Nebraska. February 20, 1925. "After an illness of about 1 week, Phillip M. Gustin was called to his better home, Sunday morning about three o'clock. The deceased was a man of cheerful disposition and always had a good word for everyone. He was of a very quiet nature and those who knew him respected him for his mind and unassuming disposition He was among the early settlers of this section and suffered the many hardships together with his fellow men. During the big blizzard of 1888, while Mr. Gustin was living on his farm southeast of town, he was one of the big losers during the storm, having lost between 60 and 70 head of cattle, which froze to death. The deceased was born in Sciota Co. Ohio on September 5 th, 1850, and while a young man started to take up the profession of his father, which was a doctor, but after two years decided that he would rather come West and help till the soil, so accordingly came to Nebraska, settling at Blair, in about 1882.Three years later he came on farther West locating at Neligh, where he assisted in the manufacturing of butter for a couple of years. Then he purchased a farm southeast of Orchard which is now owned and occupied by Frank Keller. While at this place he was united in marriage to Mrs Lochie McLain, who was a widow with four children,Spencer, Ambrose, Clayton and Cora. To Mr. and Mrs. Gustin was born five children, two of whom died in infancy and the three surviving are Frank, Leslie and Pearl. At the time of his death the wife and four children were at his side, Ambrose, Leslie, Cora and Pearl. Aside from the widow and five children he is survived by one brother and two sisters who reside in Portsmouth, Ohio. About twenty years age Mr. Gustin and family moved to Orchard where they conducted a hotel for a number of years in the building that they now occupy, and later the deceased carried mail on the Star route which goes to Middle Bank, Star and Venus. This job he was faithful to for 20 years being forced to give it up about three years ago on account of his health, having lost his eyesight and for the past two years was unable to see anything, this was a very hard shock to him for the fact that he was very fond of reading. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the United Brethern Church at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. Harvey and internment made in the local cemetery." ________________________________________________________ We visited the Orchard library and the librarian was Ms Eva Auman aged 82. She knew the Gustin family well and was close friends to Pearl. She really liked Phil Gustin as a rural mail carrier and she used to ride with him on his route when she was a child. He used a team or horses and pulled a wagon with an enclosed cab which contained a stove for winter use. His daughter, Pearl Gustin Thurman, ran the resturant for many years and couldn't drive and Mrs Auman, the librarian, drove her in later years. The Gustin house was torn down in the summer of 1993. just before we visited. They were still clearing the lot for a building for fast food. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From the Feb, 27, 1925 issue of the Orchard News. GUSTIN, PHILLIP M.
