Jordan Was a prominent citizen of Rutland, Mass. and the father of Captain Phineas Stevens, a prominent resident of Charleston, N.H. He held many town offices in Rutland including town clerk, Selectman, assessor, treasurer, deacon of the church

Joseph Stevens lived in several towns in Mass. and finially settled in Rutland. He and his wife, Prudence Rice, had ll children. the Indians attacked him while he was in a field with his sons. They killed two, Samuel and Joseph, and carried Phineas and Isaac to Canada. He followed and finially succeeded in getting them back. It took more than a year to rescue them and he spent all his money and he died in want.

Joseph Stevens married Prudence Rice, daughter of John Rice, and settled in Sudbury. After living several years in this place he removed to Farmington. He was of Lancaster from 1716-1719 where he had two children, Joseph and Isaac. The next year he probably moved to Rutland where, after its incorporation, he became one its most prominent citizens being honored by his townsmen with various offices and with a deaconship with the Church. He had children born in Sudsbury, Farmington and Rutland, 11 in all.
