dates from Cemetery records ----------------------------------------------------------------- From THE BRADFORD STAR- April 2 1903 Achatius Stevens died at his home in Standing Stone March 31 after an illness of 13 months of paralysis, aged 81 years. He was the son of Aza and Phoebe ( Vought ) Stevens and was born in Standing Stone, where he has always lived, 10 Jan 1822. He was a grandson of Jonathan Stevens, a Revolutionary soldier, who was prominent in the early affairs of this County. Mr. Stevens' whole life was spent as a farmer. He was a man of sterling qualities, a good citizen and a kind and obliging neighbor. In faith he was a Universalist and in politics a true friend of Democracy. In 1852 he was united in marriage with Sarah, daughter of Jabez Symner of Wyalusing. She died in 1895. The surviving children are Asa S. Stevens of Franklindale and Miss Lucy E. Stevens and Habez H. Stevens residing on the homestead, besides one brother Nelson Stevens of Standing Stone and a sister, Mrs Jane Bush of Sayre. Funeral services will be held from the home this morning at 10:30 with interment at the Stevens Cemetery. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From HISTORY OF BRADFORD CO by Bradsby 1891 Achaitius Stevens . farmer, was born in Standing Stone township, this County, Jan 10 1822 and us the son of Aza Stevens who was born in Wlkes Barre, 24 Sept, 1790, son of Jonathan Stevens, a taylor, who was born in Canterbury, Conn, in 1764.. Aza Stevens received a common-school education and worked on a farm until his 24 th year, when he received from his father 50 acres of land, adding to it later; built his first log house in 1815 and lived in it till 1844, when he built his present frame house, which he enlarged afterwards, and followed farming until he died., February 20, 1789. He had married in 1814, Phebe, daughter of Achaitius and Jane ( Oakley) Vaught who died March 16, 1876 Achatius Stevens was educated in the district schools until he was 18, then worked on a farm till he was 30, when he purchased his present farm of 60 acres. He added 30 acres in 1864 and built his house in 1872. He has been town treasurer 30 years, is a member of the grange,No 354 and the Universalist Church; in politics he was a Democrat. He married in 1852, Sarah, daughter of Jabez and Lucy ( Thurston ) Sumner.This is one of the highly respected and influential families of Bradford Co. --
