I wrote the following about my sister, Alice Crater, at the time of her death.
I have just witnessed the final illness and death of a brave Christian lady, my sister-Alice Cady. Her faith and spirit was an inspiration to all of us.
She only knew of her burden for about seven weeks. She never complained and never said WHY ME but accepted her fate and faded with the tide without complaint. Alice lived for only six days after she learned that the cancer had come back after the surgery. The family, the doctor and her pastor gathered in her hospital room and, with her, debated the options of more surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. She concurred with us that heroics were of no value as that the quality of her life would not warrent further treatments. It was decided to take her home where she would die with family and friends in peace. Shirley Cady, armed with morphine, stayed with her constantly and saw that she never admitted pain.
I was out of town for two days and when I returned Sunday evening she asked if I had had supper. I said yes and then she asked the family to gather around. She said, very calmly, that Jesus was in the room and that she was in peace... Then she called each of us by name and thanked us individually by being around for her to love. When she was through she said that she had said her goodbyes but might stick around for a day or two to disappoint us. She then closed her eyes. She lived another 24 hours and she could respond to our questions till the peaceful end.
