Misc. Notes
From JOHN HOWLAND OF THE MAYFLOWER THROUGH DESIRE HOWLAND FOR FIVE GENERATIONS. John Howland came on the Mayflower as a servant of John Carver. He is best remembered as having fallen off the Mayflower during a mighty storm, as recorded by Bradford. In sundry of these storms the winds were so fierce and the seas so high as they could not bear a know of sail but were forced to hull in a mighty storm. A lusty young man called John Holland coming upon some occasion above the gratings was, with a seele of the ship, thrown into the sea: but it pleased God that he caught hold of the towsail halyards which hung overboard and ran out at length. Yet he held his hold ( though he was sundry fathoms under water ) til he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, then with a
boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years and became a profitable member both in
church and commonwealth.
--------------------------------------
Although 1592 is the accepted date of his marriage but 1599 seems to be a better date. He was a man servant to William Bradford, Servants were contracted out till age 25 so he must have been under 25 in 1620.This means that he must have been born after 1595 He signed the MAYFLOWER COMPACT and must have been born before1600 to be old enough to sign. His wife was born in 1607 and it is unlikely a man of 32 would have married a girl of 17. Most men married at about 25 years of age putting him born at 1599.; If he was born in 1592 he would have been 57 when his last child was born. Bradford called him a lusty young man it would have been unlikely if he was 28 in 1620.
