Squire was a prisoner at Alton, Ill. during the Civil War as a citizen. I am not sure that he was a very nice person. When his brother-in-law, Elias Thrasher, died Squire went to the destitute widow and offered to take her daughter, Mary Jane. He promised, according to Mary Jane, to raise her as his own and to adopt her. She also said that he promised to leave her 1/6 th of his estate. Squire owned a sizable amount of property and 1/6 th could have amounted to several dollars then. Squire died before he did all these things for Mary Jane. She later testified in court that he treated her worse than his daughters, Elizabeth and Nancy. That she had to do all the work Ect. There were other persons that testified that this was not true.
