He was working in a field with his brother and an Indian servant when they were attacked by Indians from th bushes. He purchased with his sons Charles and Jerahmeel 700 acres on which he lived and farmed forming a small settlement with his cousin's son, John and family. His name was first on the list of members of the Congregational Church. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From THE WILDER CONNECTION It is said of him as a kind of tradition in the family, that when over seventy two years of age, he took a horseback journey, and put up for the night in a tavern where he was accustomed to stop. On retiring for the night, the landlord told him thet he must not go to the barn in the morning, as was his habit of doing, until he was with him, for there was a ferocious bull in the yard, and his life would be in danger. He had always cared for his horse and he was not baffled. The bull according to his nature came after him. He stepped aside and as the bull passed he sprang on the back of the enraged animal, and with spur and whip, rode him around till he could go no further.
