Notes on the English origin of Deacon Samuel Bass and William Sevill of Braintree, Ma. by Waldo Chamberlain Sprague of Wollaston, Ma. as THE DESCENDANTS OF DEACON SAMUEL AND ANN BASS by Charissa Taylor Bass 1940 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Listed in the parish register in Saffron Walden Co. Essex, England is the marriage of Samuel Bass and Ann Savill on April 25 1625. Also listed are the baptisms of the two oldest children, Samuel in 1626 and John in 1630. Also found was the baptism of Ann Sevill in 1601 ----------------------------------------------------------------- From DESCENDANTS OF DEACON SAMUEL BASS Deacon Samuel and wife, Ann, with several children, came from England to Roxbury in 1632. there they were members of Rev. John Elliott's church. They were admitted as members in 1633 and he was admitted a freeman on 15 Jan 1634 They moved to Braintree in 1640 to a homestead on present Granite Street in a part of town now Quincy. He was appointed commissioner to perform marriages and keep records in Braintree on 2 June 1641 Samuel Bass was elected first deacon of Braintree Church 6 July 1640 On 15 Jan 1666 he and three others bought the whole of Braintree for 1900 lbs, Sam Bass acquiring 1/4 of the property. His obituary found in the records of the town clerk " Deacon Samuel Bass, aged 94, departed this life upon the 30 day of Dec. 1694 He had been a Deacon of the church of Braintree for a space of 50 years, and was the father, grandfather and great grandfather of a hundred and sixty two children before he died, the youngest whereof was Benjamin Bass, the son of Joseph Bass and Mary his wife, born 7 days before his death. He represented the town in no less that 12 General Courts, serving in important committees, was a selectman innumerable times and active in the Church and all the time continued his farming" Among his descendants were presidents John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Calvin Coolidge..
