He left a widow and a son Stephen Rector He at one time lived at Kaskaskia, Ill. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF J.J. RECTOR In the war of 1812 Elias was Colonel of the 1 st regiment and proceeded with it up the Mississippi with brothers Nelson and Stephen as captains. At one time the Indians lined the banks and firing set the boat on fire but they got in the water and floated down the river with the boat as a shield. In 1819 Elias was appointed postmaster of St Louis, Mo. and his nephews, Thurston and Conway were his assistants. He remained postmaster till his death in 1822 ----------------------------------------------------------------

from HISTORY OF HOWARD AND CHARITON COUNTIES The second deed in the County. Summing the two page deed that is in my files. Risdon H. Price and Wife Mary sold for 4800.00 dollars a tract of land of 1600 a situated in Howard Co. There being some question that the United States recognize the title it was declared that if the U.S. would evict Elias Rector that Price or his heirs would repay Elias Rector the 4800.00 plus interest at
6 %. The U.S. did not recognise the title and they had to sue to get their money back with interest.

"Elias Rector 1785 - 1822 a native of Fauquier Co. Va moved to St.Louis from Ill. in 1816.
WHILE IN ILL. BETWEEN 1806 AND 1816. Rector and his older brother, William, served as deputy surveyors of the Kaskaskia district. Elias also served as adjutant general of the Illinois territorial militia from 1810 to 1813, receiving a commission as Colonel in 1812.
Already Landowner in St.Louis, Elias moved to the city after William was appointed surveyor over Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas Territories. Elias became the first city postmaster in 1819 and was on the first steamboat, the Independence, to go up the Mississippi. He was elected to the State Senate but died before he finished his term." On 3 May 1809 he was
appointed Attorney General of Illinois.
