He had 3 sons by his mariage to Esther Price and six sons by his second marriage to Sarah Allen He served as a private in the Revolutionary way from Sussex Co. N.J. He was a Colonel in the Sussex Malitia in 1793. In 1798 he was elected to the New Jersey Assembly. He was sworn in as high sheriff 20 Oct 1807, Judge of the court of common pleas 18 Feb 1818. He was one of the original directors of the Sussex Bank and the first postmaster at Augusta. He was well educated and many famous politicians came to ask his advice. He gave land for the first church. He owned numerous slaves. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From ANCESTRY OF JOHN S. GUSTIN- Col John Gustin was a man of good education , much intelligence abd had a strong and indomitable will. His business interest were as varied as his positions political and otherwise. In politics he was an autocrat of the neighborhood and exercised an imperious way with his followers. In addition o his other business interests he was at one time proprietor of the tavern. In 1827 he gave an acre of land for a church for the presbyterian Society which was organized in 1820 and was sold in 1875 and is used as a barn. Since Judge Gustin was sheriff of the Count he was a leader in the Federal party in that region. He was visited by One encounter was with Governor Clinton of New York who was thinking of building a canal between New York and New Jersey and to ask his advise about building the Erie Canal His son, Horacio Gustin, became civil engineer and accompany Clinton's party in surveys.He was member of the upper house in 1830-18, 1822 and 1827. Several of his sons were members of the New Jersey legislature.

in 1827, Col John Gustin generously donated a lot of land at Augusta for a building that was erected. It was a plain but substantial edifice and comfortably seated two hundred people. It was sold in 1875 and devoted to the use of a barn.
