Misc. Notes
From The Ancestors of Edna Frances Cady by Robert Cady Gates Justice Joseph Cady resided in the large stone house which his father built in 1714 and he was very active politically. He was on the committee on public lands, served as town clerk, deputy to the general court, and held, for many years, the office of justice. It is said that he brought the first horse-drawn coach into the town, He was one of the founders of Pomfret's famous library asociation, organized in 1739, which was named the Society or Company for Propagating Christian and Useful Knowledge in the towns of Woodstock, Pomfret, Mortlake and Killingly and west part of Thompson Parish. It is said that the society had books as ponderous as its title.. In 1744 after his daughter Demaris's husband, Rev. Pearley Howe, was elected pastor of the Killingly's church, Joseph built the couple a large gambrel-roofed house on the east side of the common old Killing Hill, now known as Putman Heights. The house was still standing in 1910 and we sawit in 1998 needing much repair.. Justice Joseph Cady sent his grandson Joseph Howe to Yale. He was fond of reading and was well versed in the books of his day. Evidence of his carefulness and skilled penmanship may still be seen by examining the first record book of Thompson Parish. ----------------------------------------------------------------- From HISTORY OF WINDHAM CO.
