Misc. Notes
Married Loomis. The following is a tale told by Mary Cady Loomis and written by Chester Moulder. The account is about the Oregon experience and she left before she was 7 years old. There is a lot of lore here and a lot of fact. She probably has heard the tales so many times that she became part of the tale.
HISTORY OF CADY FAMILY BY MARY ( CADY ) LOOMIS
Thomas Cady of --------- was born in New York State. His parents and some of the family died when he was about 7 years old . They died of milk poison caused by the cows eating a poison weed. Part of the family was not at home at the time and so escaped . His sister, Sally, was older than the rest and I think was a half sister. I knew her as a dear old lady wearing a black lace cap. We called her Auntie Lincoln. She lived with her son, William, at Spring Prarie, Wisc. He owned and operated a cheese factory and marketed the output of this factory in Milwaukee, Wisc. He always brought a quantity of maple sugar when he returned from a trip to Milwaukee. He had two children, William and Ida. Thomas Cady also had a sister, Elizabeth, who married Avery Hoyt and lived at Honey Creek, Wisc. I never knew Uncle Avery as he died before I can remember.. Avery Hoyt had three children, two girls and a boy. Father ( Thomas Cady ) had an idea of having his children all married and living in the same house. So he proceeded to build this house that had 22 rooms which was built at Bloom Prarie, Wisc. ( Father ) Thomas Cady crossed the plains in the same caravan that mother did. They met on the road, her mother and father, four sisters and five brothers were also along. One day while on this trip and walking ahead of the wagons. which was the custom at this time. they came upon a man lying in the dust overcome by the intense heat and thirst. Mother milked one of the cows and washed his face with the milk and gave him some to drink, this being their first meeting. After they reached Oregon, on June 15 th, 1849 they were married. Mother's brothers and sisters were married and had their families along on this trip. Father ( Thomas Cady ) went to California during the gold rush of 1849 and made some money. He remained in California where he had a large herd of cattle which were herded in the Sacromento Valley by the boy's help ( Thomas, Jared, David ). When they started back East they had a fortune of $ 40,000.00. in gold. It was very heavy and hard to conceal and in order to accomplish this they made two jackets of unbleached muslin doubled and sewed pieces of gold between cloth She wore one jacket and he the other. I can remember seeing her making the jackets. On their return trip East they came by boat to the Isthmus of Panama and by boat to New York then by rail to Wisconsin. Father's brother, Henry Cady, lived at Rochester, Wisc. Our whole family stayed a short time at Rochester, Wis. Racine Co.with Henry before going to Walworth Co. Wisc. near Lake Geneva where father is buried. After the
Civil War father decided that his first plan to all live in one house was not practical so he sold the beautiful place and emigrated to Missouri where he purchased four farms near linneus, Missouri. He then returned to Wisconsin for his family and died there. Mother then hired two men to help us move to Missouri, we had two wagons, a buggy, 400 head of sheep a dog and several small pups, one of which became lost everything was stopped and until one of the party went back and found it asleep where they had camped. Mother brought one of the first cook stoves to Linn Co. We were four weeks on the road coming from the 22 room mansion to a two room log shack After some time mother married one of the hired men,Adison Balcome. ----------------------------------------------------------------- - Mother was the daughter of Jared and Mary Michael. She being one of 10 as above mentioned. The family record of the Michael family was taken from the old family bible which was carried across the plains in the 40's and in crossing the streams this bible became water soaked and grandmother sat up all night drying it out. It is now in the hands of Jared Michael of Portland, Oregon. Grandfather Michael was a blacksmith and carried a plow and a peck measure full of coin money on this trip across the plains. Grandfather decided that someone was stealing his oats feed so he placed a quanity of shoe pegs in the oats and the next morning had no trouble in locating the thief. ----------------------------------------------------------------- When her mother died. W.A. Balcolm was made her guardian till 13 Dec. 1870 when Wm B. Brinkley was made guardian.
